Very disappointed! My Wife and I were celebrating our Wedding Anniversary. I chose The Anise restaurant hoping it was somewhere special. To start with we were the only ones in the restaurant, always a bad sign, especially on a Friday evening! The waitress was very nice and very polite, but we were welcomed with the news " there aren't any scallops this evening"! That's 20% of the starters not available, as there is only a choice of 5! The food was cold (starter and Main courses), which we couldn't work out why, as they were not busy. The hotel has two restaurants, the Anise and the Bay Tree which is the more casual restaurant. We were halfway through our meal in the empty restaurant, when the waiting staff came in, pushed several tables together and used part of this room as an overflow from the other restaurant. What ambiance there was, had just been blown away. Will not be going back, unless they change their ways.

I was really looking forward to eating here after reading the reviews. My friend and I had a lovely time in the hotel and really enjoyed the Spa, but when we went for our evening meal it was a bit of a let down. The food looked okay and the staff were really nice, but the food was tasteless. I didn't enjoy it at all. I won't visit again.

Love the feel of this place, staff very friendly. The presentation of the food was outstanding and tasted as good as it looked, the scallops were delicious and well cooked. The duck was cooked to perfection and well presented and the accompiments were well suited to the meal. Service was well timed, didn't feel rushed. The wine was reasonably priced.

My partner and I absolutely loved the food and service in this restaurant. It's a shame it is so out of the way. The attention to detail was great - every dish looked lovely and tasted divine. I had the lobster bisque to start which was incredibly rich, smooth and flavourful. I went onto duck and foie gras which was cooked to perfection - I particularly enjoyed the texture of the foie gras. My partner was similarly impressed with his dishes (scallops starter and rib eye steak main). We were stuffed by the end and had no room for dessert. At £30 for 2 courses we thought this was great value. The wine selection was excellent too. Service was attentive but not intrusive, and pleasant. My only quibble is with the general ambience. The music was awful - the same cheesy greatest hits as was playing in the bar and lobby - really some jazz or classic music would have been better. It was very quiet as most of the hotel guests chose to eat in the cheaper Bay Tree restaurant next door. This would have been fine except for the fact that the doors connecting the two were left permanently open, which meant you had all of the roar of a busy restaurant with none of the jovial atmosphere that comes with it. The room was very neat and tidy but to be honest the decor was a bit bland. This really is a minor complaint though. I would very heartily recommend this restaurant and if I am ever in the area again will definitely go back.

Ambience too bright for an evening meal. Starters and Main courses very nice, although on the cold side, I had the beef that was the best dish in the menu but I guess it was sitting at the pass for too long. Dessert just ok, my husband had the chocolate dessert and I had the cheese selection (very disappointing), the cheese was placed on top of a curried chutney that I didn't care for, should have been on the side, got replaced, i didn't enjoy it. Staff very polite, but not product knowledge at all, something that you can expect from a high street restaurant, not from an AA rosette restaurant.160 pounds?? not value for money.
