A Traditional Derbyshire Inn
With A Five Counties View!

The Barrel Inn, a traditional Derbyshire country inn, dates back to 1597 and stands at the head of Bretton Clough, in the heart of the Peak District.

Being one of only five properties in this small hamlet, on a table of land some 1300 feet above sea level, The Barrel Inn proudly claims to be the highest pub in Derbyshire.

Its panoramic views of the majestic Hope Valley and the Peak District National Park are magnificent and on a clear day you are able to enjoy views over five counties.

The pub serves a fine selection of well kept real ales and delicious, freshly cooked, mostly locally sourced food, every day.

Old worldly charm - peaceful oak-beamed bar, real log fires, flagstone floors, studded doors in low doorways, beamed ceilings and polished copper and brass - have all been retained to enhance the overall charm and friendliness of the Inn.

We had or valentine set menu here. The starters were excellent and the main was tasty. We had the beef Wellington which was huge but lacked vegetables which would have made it excellent. We have had better meals here before.

I know The Barrel Inn from many years of dining there. It has always been outstanding. It has benefited hugely following the modernisation carried out during Covid lockdown. But still, it has retained its traditional country pub atmosphere. I should declare perhaps that although my great grandfather was a historic proprietor (1890‐1906) I have no ongoing relationship, other than to recommend it to others. The panoramic views over the surrounding Peak District are, on their own, well worth the visit.

First time visit to the Barrell and thoroughly enjoyed it. The place is very nice, clean and cosy. Outstanding views on a clear day. The food was great and reasonably priced, very friendly and attentive staff. Would have liked more gluten free dessert options, only ice cream and sorbet available so I decided not to bother this time. We will be back though!

Fabulous historic pub with wonderful views. Cosy fires in winter, a sun trap in summer. Very interesting menu, which is great value for food of high quality. The venison steak was mouth watering, with the little cottage pie to accompany it a great touch. The drinks choice was not the most inspiring. Some tasty local beers would be a good addition. Friendly efficient service. Will definitely return.
