About this restaurant

  • Great for craft beers
  • Good for groups
  • Charming
The Belgian Monk opened in December 2000. The main objective was to create something different yet to fit in with the way drinking and dining is changing. It has become a successful and established bar and restaurant, offering customers a choice of a regular selection of some 45 beers together with a selection of special beers. The menu is based on serving only the best products available freshly prepared daily, at realistic prices, in an informal relaxed "friends and family" atmosphere. It provides more than just the meal or drink but a whole Belgian experience. Now owned and run by Wursty Four Biers Ltd the new owners hope to take this fantastic venue to new heights and enhance the service style and offer. Sincerely not to be missed!

Very friendly staff welcomed us into the restaurant and every member of the staff was all very friendly. We were taken to our table. There isn't much room between the tables. Every time the people behind me wanted to get out I had to stand up and push my chair in for them to get out. There wasn't much room on the other side so we couldn't move the table to make more room . We had 2 garlic bread with cheese for a starter to share. They were nice, very hard to cut and not very garlicky. We had the Cod, garlic Mussles , The Belgain monk Tartiflette, a traditional Tartiflette and Française Tartiflette. All the mains were delicious. Not overly expensive. Lots of different beers to choose from. Would eat there again

We changed our table time to a bit earlier which was very good of them. We were looked after very well, the food was very good and a great selection of drinks.

The toilets need a complete refurbishment as not changed for years and we’re grubby and a bit smelly

The mussels were just perfect, juicy and tasty with a creamy sauce and the meatballs my husband ordered were very tasty, but said a bigger portion would have been better. The wine was very pleasant but not the strength stated on the menu. I found it very difficult in a city full of life that this restaurant refused to accommodate tables during the afternoon, when advertising food all day , very disappointing. We were not able to order deserts, being told the kitchen staff had gone for a break. Just wanted it to be perfect. Had another reservation in a few weeks time but have now cancelled.

Food was nice. Quite dear for what you got. Had special's board up but when we ordered from it they said they hadn't got it 5 minutes later but didn't take it off the board. 2 of the drinks we wanted they didn't have either. I ordered the mussels, when they came out they had a lid on. Was not told the lid was extra hot and burnt my fingers on it. The mussels was very hot as well could eat then for a good 10 minutes as to let them cook down. There is a service charge on the bill. Was asked if it was OK but I think it really should be a choice to pay a tip instead of been made to feel like u should. Maybe just my opinion.

Started disappointing and then got worse. As we were being seated we were told the food items we wanted (and others) were not available. Ok we thought, it’s the “Flight of Beer” advertised on their web site that we were really interested in. Their website says: Flight of Beer: "We have selected some of Belgium’s best draught beers. 1/3rd of a pint samplings of six of our draught beers. Great for food pairings: £16.95 (May not be available during busy periods.)" However the waitress wasn’t aware of this option and said it had never been available since she had worked there. I asked the manager and showed him the website. He just said he had no control over the website. After some discussion, he did then offer to do the flight, but with just four beers rather than the six advertised. There were hardly any customers, just us and another couple upstairs, and a few people downstairs. It feels like the staff have given up on the place so perhaps it’s no surprise that customers have also. We went elsewhere.

Table for 2 booked on Monday 21st April at 6pm, excellent service from Elyssia. Food was of a high quality, and was reasonably priced. Quite a small pub, which was good as meant it wasn't loud at all Well worth a visit

Always a good culinary experience at The Belgian Monk and our recent visit was no exception. Great food choice well cooked and presented. Staff were excellent without exception. Very reasonable prices given the quality of food on offer. Good choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available. We will be back!
