About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Fancy
The Black Hen Restaurant offers a metropolitan dining experience in a small college town. While there are some classic dishes that are always available, the majority of our menu changes very frequently. We value the culinary diversity the global community has to offer while still maintaining heart strings tied to the South Eastern US and Appalachian offerings that surround us. We also offer a strong wine list and an often changing craft cocktail selections.

Don’t eat here. The kitchen was so backed up that it took forever to be served. The fish was like cardboard.

Food was flavorful, but smaller portions for the price paid. We waited quite a bit of time from the time the check was presented to the time the server came back to complete the transaction. No music in the restaurant that made conversations loud. As usual in Blacksburg, parking was difficult. No on premises parking.

Poor service, kind server, but poor service. The food had no flavor and was overcooked Our tablecloth was a wrinkly mess if you can believe that one. Save your money.

Unfortunately this restaurant was a huge disappointment. We had been seated for over an hour before we got our appetizer and then had to wait a long time for our main course. Server apologized several times but it was incredibly slow.

Compared to other restaurants in the area, this is upscale but also a little more expensive. The location is excellent with outdoor space, weather permitting. There is also a decent size private room for large groups. When we arrived there were only 2 or 3 other tables in use but there was a large group in the private area. Unfortunately for us, they put their order in right before we did which pushed ours back and we did have a small wait for our appetizers and a long wait for our entrees. However, this was not the fault of the waitress who couldn't have been more apologetic and offered us drinks by way of compensation. She also brought us a dessert free of charge. Fortunately, we were not in a hurry and were happy to enjoy a relaxed meal. The food was excellent and as someone with dietary restrictions they are very accommodating. For fellow Celiac sufferers, although the kitchen is not dedicated gluten free, I made them aware and am pleased to say I did not have any adverse reactions. Overall, a great experience and we will be back!

Really disappointed in our experience. We ordered apps and one meal. The salad that came with the meal came out with everything else, not first. We waited 40 minutes for any food. 2 of the apps and entree came out. 15 minutes later, we got our caprese. Then, we noticed a piece of chicken from the chicken kabob was raw. The meal had been eaten. I wasn’t asking to get a free meal or anything. I let the server know. She could have cared less. I said, you should let the cook know the chicken was undercooked. The server walked off, brought back the bill. That was it. No manager or chef apology, free desert, even a “thanks for letting me know, we will address it! “. Poor service. Slow service, food is average. Wanted it to be a better experience.
