Serves fresh, bold and innovative food that reflects the history of New Bedford and celebrates the New Bedford fishermen, their catch and their culture.

Menu focuses on local fishermen’s catch of the day, old school seafood favorites and a sprinkling of modern seafood interpretations. Menu ranges from raw bar, to warm and cold lobster rolls, baked cod, bacon wrapped scallops, bouillabaisse and grilled NY Strip.

Large bar and spectacular views of the artful New Bedford Fishing Fleet. Large covered outside deck overlooking the fishing boats and harbor. Centrally located beside the Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Ferries. Large parking lot.

And, of course, the hospitality is second to none. Service is what built the business.

This is our favorite restaurant around. Our server, Katrina, was wonderful! Everything was perfect, from the steamers to the sushi to the octopus. Absolutely fantastic.

I visit the Black whale quite often, whether family events, business events. The food is always amazing and our waitress was simply courteous, friendly, and great.

Excellent per usual! We did call to ask if we could expand our reservation from 4 to 8 people and were told it would have to be at 8:30pm if so. We took a chance and booked another 4 person reservation and when we arrived asked to be seated near each other. This wasn’t a problem since the outdoor seating only had a few other tables even in use. Outdoor was pretty empty seemed odd that we couldn’t expand the reservation for that time, but it all worked out and the food was delicious as always.

Our server Bailey was wonderful! We love the seafood spread and crackers to start. The outdoor patio was much warmer and better staffed than the last time I came to the restaurant a year ago.

We went to dine at an off time, which was great! It was not super crowded. We sat on the heated and covered patio. The temperature was comfortable. Our server was friendly and very pleasant. She was patient while we asked questions and decided what to order. She was attentive and catered to us perfectly. I had shrimp cocktail, which came with cocktail sauce and a dollop of horseradish. OMG! Big beautiful, tasty shrimp and the burn of that sauce....sheer perfection! It's the bam that every shrimp needs! I had key lime pie. It was delicious. It was the perfect combination of tart and sweet. Absolutely divine! I also had strawberry shortcake. It was very good, but I have one pretty big issue with it. The description said it came with a biscuit. I imagined a more traditional definition of a "biscuit". What I got was very hard....hard to cut, hard to chew....almost like a stale, burnt muffin. It ruined the dessert for me. If I could next time just skip the "biscuit" and have the lovely, juicy strawberries and delicious vanilla ice cream, I'd be thrilled. My husband had a dish with pork, littlenecks and shrimp. He said it was very good. They gave him a big serving spoon to scoop the contents from the bowl onto his plate. However, I later caught him drinking the bottom of the bowl broth from that big serving spoon. I wanted to climb under the table from embarrassment. I recommend going at slow times because it can get very noisy and congested in the late afternoon and evening. Overall, it was wonderful. It is rather pricey, but the quality and taste of the food is worth it. Watching the sunset from the patio is an added bonus!

Another wonderful experience at the Black Whale! From the second we were greeted by the manager on staff, he made us feel so incredibly welcome. It was such a pleasant start to the visit. And was Christine our server was a sweetheart, as she continued to make sure that our visit was nothing but perfect! We each got specials that were absolutely out of this world! The cocktails were delicious! It truly is one of our favorite restaurants! The location, especially the people that work there, of course, the food and cocktails! Never ever disappoints!
