The Cavalier is a London-inspired brasserie, located adjacent to Hotel Zetta in San Francisco's SoMA neighborhood. The upscale British influenced restaurant is brought to you by Executive Chef Jennifer Puccio, managing partner James Nicholas, and award winning San Francisco designer, Ken Fulk. The 135-seat restaurant is divided into four unique, intimate spaces: the Blue Bar, Main Dining Room, Wine Stables, and Rail Car. The interior is designed with deep leather banquettes, polished brass, zinc and white marble, lending a posh and sultry feel.

    It had been a while since we had been back to the Cavalier (just a couple weeks before Pandemic, in fact), but we were most pleased to return to the warm British ambiance. comfortable atmosphere, and attentive staff. We opened with a drink (the house Vesper is wonderful!), then were seated, drinks in hand, for our dinner. The Porcini Gnocchi were hand-made pillows of heaven (Parisienne gnocchi), robed in an unctuous sauce rich with wild mushrooms, herbs, and truffle cream. The Burrata & Eggplant was also wonderful: a slice of melt-in-your-mouth-tender eggplant topped with delicious fresh burrata, with a touch of spiced tomato and broccoli rabe. The Herbed Brick Chicken was tender and hearty, with a rich herb coating, atop grilled broccolini, and hiding tasty cippolini onions, and an accompanying salsa verde. My lady chose the Pan Seared Salmon, with brown butter & bacon Brussels sprouts, celery root beurre blanc, and citrus. This was a bit of a miss, with the salmon portion being just a bit paltry, and oversalted (just a miss due to the night?). But upon reporting this to the staff, the plate was quickly removed, and a decision made to replace it with the Seared Sea Scallops, featuring a decadent dungeness crab risotto, brightened with a touch of lemon. This was everything (and more!) that the salmon did not deliver, with the scallops seared golden, delicately tender, and sweet, and the Dungeness crab risotto rich, but in perfect proportion to the scallops. Executive Chef Jennifer Puccio has been doing a stellar job at Cavalier for a while now; this restaurant, around the corner and a block down from so much activity, is a solid gem in the difficult SF restaurant market. But, with one small miss (quickly replaced and surpassed), our experience was absolutely wonderful. The staff is congenial, the bar well-stocked (a great wine list, too!) and ably staffed, the ambiance warm and wonderful, and the food simply divine! We look forward to returning again soon!

    The fish and chips were great. Enjoyed the seasoning of the fries. The scallop dish contained four small scallops for 42$ — just know before ordering. If I go the next time, value-wise, I’d definitely do the fish n chips. Great ambiance and attentive service staff.
