About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Fancy
The Great Room Restaurant is undoubtedly one of Northern Ireland’s most extraordinary restaurants. Thanks to the remarkable original Victorian interior with its glass cupola, Ireland’s largest chandelier an array of plasterwork detailing, the space is second to none. Needless to say our chefs search tirelessly to bring the finest seasonal ingredients together in eloquent dishes in thoughtfully prepared menus, just one of the reasons The Great Room Restaurant was awarded 2 AA Rosettes. All this is complemented by expert service and a wine list to which all the superlatives apply!
Mid- week lunch is served Monday to Friday from 12.00 to 14.15

To book our iconic Afternoon Tea, please search for Afternoon Tea at The Merchant Hotel.

Extremely slow service! They begun to serve tasting nenu before pre-dinner cocktails were brought to us. Had to wait 45 mins for drinks.

The cocktail pairing event was amazing. The food was delicious and the surroundings were decadent. The staff as always were flawless in the service they provided. If I could award it 100 stars I would. Loved it all - thanks for having us

Review: Disappointing Tasting Menu Experience We visited The Merchant for my husband’s birthday, expecting a special dining experience, but unfortunately, it fell far short. The tasting menu was the poorest we’ve had. The starter resembled a cold slice of terrine in pastry—uninspired and unappetizing. The duck course was dry and completely lacking in flavour, while the scallop course was the only standout dish of the evening. The beef was average, the pre-dessert decent, but the main dessert was a disaster—sloppy, heavy, and lacking the finesse you’d expect from a tasting menu. Service was polite, but we were attended to by several different staff members, which disrupted the flow and left us with little insight into the dishes. The wine pairing was extremely overpriced for the tiny portions and offered little value. Overall, the experience felt generic and overpriced, with food that lacked taste and creativity. Hugely disappointing for a celebratory occasion. We won’t be returning.

It's always a great experience to dine here. Sunday lunch is particularly good. It is prepared and served in just the same manner as you would expect of a Saturday night celebratory meal. The quality of the food is simply "the finest" and it is in expert hands in the kitchen. I am particularly taken with the wine list and the stock of the wines on offer. There is no shyness in selecting great world wide wines to offer and The Great Room leads many UK restaurants in their choice to accompany the fine dining experience. Every time we are in Belfast on a Sunday, this is our "go to" venue for lunch.

Living on reputation. Arrived at 18.58 but by the time waiter had gone through water and drinks requirement, we were refused Summer menu at 19.05. Not our fault especially when we had sent a note requesting this. Anyway after a pork amuse bouche we were served our starters at 19.30. My wife had gone to the loo but bizarrely this wasn’t noticed and starters were served anyway. After 5 minutes, one of the assistant Managers covered the food to keep it warm. Unfortunately the starters were cold and we were not asked about quality while we ate the course. Mains were served just after 20.00 and were tasty, one of the side dishes was cool which was removed. On to dessert and we ordered tipsy cake between us. Total disaster sponge meets Yorkshire pudding. Tipsy cake should be moist with sherry - big training need. We left 90% of dessert but it took them 25minutes to check on us. Arrived 18.58 and left 21.35!! So so disappointed and would not recommend this at all. Don’t believe reputations and the pompous menu. Wake up Belfast
