Tonari is our Wafu Italian restaurant. WAFU means Japanese-style, so our menu is a Japanese take on Italian food. It originated in Japan through the love that the Japanese had for Italian food but wanted to incorporate some of their cultural flavors and ingredients to them. We at Daikaya Group and chef & owner, Katsuya Fukushima, are bringing this experience to you here in DC.

Looking for some fun Japanese antipasti bites, one of a kind pasta dishes, or pizza that you won't find anywhere else in the city? Then come join us for dinner, we look forward to having you soon.

I am a frequent visitor to Tonari & often bring guests to introduce them to my favorite DC restaurant! Wonderful atmosphere, delicious food, impeccable service. I was disappointed with the new menu, particularly the removal of its fabulous signature dish broccolini. I never failed to order it. Please bring it back! Its loss also leaves the menu with insufficient green veggie options. Also miss the chicken shishito, but a less serious a loss.

I have no idea why this place isn't packed and overrun every night. But I guess I'm glad I can still get in? The pizza's are the thing for me. I wish I could eat a whole one by myself because I just want those flavors in my mouth forever. But they are Very filling and a little goes a long way. Plan to share. I also love the every-changing sides and the clever presentations. The Caesar salad is deelish (even though I push the fresh anchovies off on to my tinned-fish-loving husband every time). Ditto the shishitos, yum. Honestly, It's worth trying something if it sounds good because it will be good. The arancini? What?! How can they be that good? It sounds like an unlikely marriage of Japanese and Italian, but be brave.

The service was phenomenal it was quick and efficient. All our servers were extremely nice and so kind and answered all our questions. The food was 10/10 out of this world all 3 of the items that we ordered were spot on with flavor. I will definitely be coming back soon to get some more items but overall fantastic place to have dinner.

Tonari is a great spot for innovative flavors served via the best comfort foods: pizza and ramen. Make a reservation for days with events at nearby Capitol One Arena because this is a popular spot for both food and drinks. Check out the cute crochet foods for sale on the bookcase next to the bar as a keepsake from an amazing meal experience.

Get the pesto ramen and stop in during the weekend for the shaved ice (kids should share 1 order).

100% recommend the Japanese Philly pizza or the unagi pizza. The Korean garlic bread and Mentaiko noodles are also a must here.

A small entrance hidden by street seating, making Tonari a little hard to find, it was well worth the effort! The staff was exceptional, accommodating our time constraints as we were going to a performance at Harman Hall, and graciously handling all of our requests. Dishes were unique and terrific - Korean Garlic Bread, WAFU Arancini with a delicious red sauce and the special Hot Honey Pepperoni pizza. The Ginger Rita cocktail was an excellent. Would definitely return to try other dishes. Perfect spot for pre-theatre (or pre-game at Capitol Arena) dining.
