About this restaurant

Top Roe is a Yōshoku Japanese restaurant located in the heart of Downtown Austin, Texas coming from the creative culinary mind of Executive Chef Paul Qui offering two experiences under one roof: Top Roe Handroll and Top Roe Izakaya.

Top Roe's Handroll counter is a 12-seat counter serving fresh handrolls, which are exclusively offered at the handroll counter to preserve the quality of each ingredient, as they should be enjoyed. Expect a quicker dining experience of about 45 minutes: tasty bites to start your night! We also offer select small bites from the izakaya menu.

Top Roe's Izakaya menu offers an extended menu and dining experience to it's handroll counterpart. Here you'll find our signature Tuna Toro Steak and Wagyu steaks, along with delicious Yakimonos (grilled dishes), Agemonos (fried dishes), Sashimis, Salads, and more.

If interested in both handrolls and izakaya please call in advance to your reservation so we may best accommodate.

Overrated and overpriced. Sashimi isn’t real sashimi, it’s coated in vinegar and other ingredients. Rolls are full of rice. All the fish seems to be brought in frozen. Serving staff is very nice but green. For the price, go to an Uchi restaurant. Maybe this place will improve but right now it’s not worth how much it will cost you.

I was really excited to try this new Paul Qui restaurant. The food was excellent… shades of signature Paul Qui. I liked the space. Not too noisy. The staff were very enthusiastic. There were a couple of mis-steps though but one in particular. (One was that they forgot the cheese topping to our lettuces which was only a bummer because half of us had already eaten them and I think the cheese would have been a wonderful addition.) The main incident, we had each ordered their equivalent of an old fashioned. Two of them were just bourbon on ice when they came and the 3rd was the drink as advertised. We told our server we thought ours may not be “complete” our server took two of them back to the bar to show the bar tender; he brought back the correct one and said he would fix the other two. It feels like anytime your food or drink leaves the table, it should just be fully replaced. Our server seemed put out when my friend asked if that was her original drink. Even weirder, when he brought back the 3 “fixed” drinks, he asked for ID’s (we are all almost 50)… doubly strange because he didn’t card us the first time. It just felt weird and passive aggressive and not in the same joyful spirit of the rest of the staff. I think they will get there. My take away is that they are operating from a place of scarcity rather than generosity and that affected the way our drink debacle was handled. Hopefully that will change. We did enjoy our food though and I will give it another try. (So happy to have a decent restaurant close to the Paramount Theatre.)

The staff at the front was very nice. No one was rude. But we were seated at the bar, and were not served for 15 minutes. My husband was really hangry, so we left. Menu looked good. I’m not sure what happened. Maybe they didn’t know who was supposed to serve us? We might give it another opportunity, but honestly there is a club right next door, and the sound of the bass and their techno (or whatever it is nowadays) was sooooooo loud. It overpowered the restaurant’s atmospheric music. Oh well. They will find their clientele.

Not managed well (wait for tables with open seats available, employees hanging on the bar area, unnecessary processes), food was okay but not worth the price. Too many other Japanese options in Austin to waste money and time here.

Staff were friendly, especially the hostess, but service needs work. We waited nearly an hour for hot food, a drink was forgotten, and we had to keep checking on our order. The sashimi was the highlight—super fresh and well-prepared.

We did the Hand Roll Bar and the food was excellent. The hand rolls we had were all very good and different enough in flavors/textures that they didn't blend in to each other and each was distinct while allowing the fish to take center stage. The Hamachi sashimi was excellent and the Bluefin sashimi was crazy (in a very good way) - we had to do seconds of both. Service was very good. I guess the only negative I could come up with is it is a bit spendy - though the quality reflects that.
