About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Neighborhood gem
Uncle Boons is a popular spot for Thai food in Manhattan's Bowery neighborhood. Husband and wife owners Matt Danzer and Ann Redding created an eclectic dining atmosphere with an exotic menu. Thai pop music plays in the dimly lit room, creating a hip, after-hours vibe. Uncle Boons' inspired cocktails are offered by the pitcher, and there's a wide variety of wines served by the glass or bottle. For an extra-refreshing treat on a hot day, opt for the beer slushie. Serving Thai food with a twist, Uncle Boons' offers large and small plates. Dishes like Thai curry beef ribs and the Thai sausage duo will give your taste buds something to remember.

My boyfriend's parents, who are part-time Manhattan dwellers, highly recommended this place. We had an early reservation (5:30 PM) on a Saturday night, and while the place was quiet when we entered, it filled up quick. This is obviously a very well-regarded joint in NYC for several very good reasons. The drinks, although pricey, are large, exotic, and strong. The vibe is casual. The service is excellent (our water glasses were never empty--a good thing when ingesting some seriously spice). And the food is delicious. Standout dishes included the lamb laab salad (mouth-tingling in its level of peppery intensity), the curried beef short ribs (super-tender with a kick), and the bone marrow satay (I can see this turning into a periodic craving). If you like Thai food with a street twist, Uncle Boons is worth a try (but do make a reservation).

The food indeed is different. But I am not sure simply because they use frog legs, sweetbread, snail, etc then it makes their food better than other Thai restaurants. My waiter was attentive but management in the front of the house was clueless. They originally labeled my 7:00 pm reservation as a "no show" before 6:00 pm. Really? How could this happen? Then when I questioned them, they tried to blame on OpenTable software. No way. This was their own fault and they didn't even want to admit it. Once they recovered my reservation... The food is fine. Fine but in my mind not great. It is just different. Two things I ordered were way over salted (the pork ribs and the beef short rib curry). The ambiance is fun but not much difference from Fatty Crab or Decoy. All and all - the food is fine. Service is fine. Front of the house almost comically clueless. They have a Michelin star but I think Sum Tum Der in Alphabet City, which also has a Michelin star, is much better and people there much more organized.

Nice environment , warm atmosphere , polite and knowledgeable waitress . Appetizers (minced lamb salad and broiled marrow bone) were excellent . However my main dish - assorted seafood curry with noodles - was tasteless while my wife's whole fish was good but had no kick and was very light on spice. Small and Very expensive wine list : $60 for a bottle of white wine to more than $100 for a decent red. As a result , in the 5 - 6 tables I could see across mine , no one ordered a bottle of wine and almost everyone went for beer ... Net Net , tamed down and very Americanized with Appetizers being a much better bet than the main courses and a pricing policy for wine that does not make sense .

Portion of each dish is small, but give group of us chance to taste more dishes there. Most dishes are delicious but the BBQ baby optupos was over cooked with black burn marks

Incredible food (the best Thai I've ever had!), authentic flavours, great atmosphere and excellent service. My boyfriend and I are big foodies, and tried several restaurants around the city during our one-week stay. This was by far our favourite meal. Every part of the experience was fantastic - we'll definitely be back during our next visit to New York!

After hearing a lot of amazing things about this restaurant, I was really excited to try it out. However, I felt like the food was on the mediocre side and the drinks weak. I was also put off by our waiter's attitude (in trying to get us to order more, rushing us out). Overall, I think there are much tastier and nicer thai restaurants in the city at this price point.

Nothing short of brilliant here. Each dish seems effortlessly casual, but you know that every one is the result of a masterfully created recipe and great fresh ingredients. Don't expect one size fits all Thai sauces with a choice of protein. Just trust the chefs and ask your waiter for advice if you are stymied by menu. Sweetbreads were probably the best I've ever eaten. Chicken liver and pineapple? Just say please. Go with a group do you can taste it all.
