The West Taghkanic Diner opened its doors in 1953 as one of four Taghkanic Diners, all built to serve travelers along the Taconic Parkway. With a large neon sign out front and retro exterior, the diner quickly became an institution and remained one as the decades passed. Today, the WTD stands as originally constructed, with the same mission as nearly 75 years ago — to provide a gathering spot for hungry passerby’s and long time residents alike. Our menu is built upon classic diner staples, reimagined using all that the Hudson Valley has to offer. From produce and grains, to dairy and meat, we’re working with nearby farms to source flavorful, local ingredients. Our pantry is stocked with products that we believe in, many of which are created right here in our community. Our meats will be house smoked, all thanks to the 9ft hot smoker - full of beautiful oak chopped by our neighbor Ron Miller - parked right outside the diner.

Although the food selection was delicious, it was rather expensive and we waited a bit for our meal.

They are still overwhelmed service wise and are still not open for dinner because of difficulty finding staff.

Stopped here for lunch on Sunday. Burgers and turkey club were fantastic as were the milkshakes. Avocado toast just meh. Loved the soda water with Hudson Shrubs. Corner booth uncomfortable for the person in the curve especially at midday with sun — the only window without blinds. The place looks fabulous and staff all friendly and accommodating, though a bit slow at times(with water and check). No worries— we still enjoyed our lunch immensely and will be back many times.

What a nice stop off on our route--a delicious brunch and scrumptious coffee cake. Glad this has been revitalized. And the iconic sign retained.

Love the redone diner, love that they kept the ambiance and all the retro parts possible. Also love that they redid the sign, hope they don't get rid of it. It does not seem offensive at all to me.

It's different. Most diners, you get pretty much the same things, especially at breakfast. This place has the regulars but everything is just a little quirky- locally sourced and very good ingredients. Flowers on the table were basically stuff you can pick on your own, but really nice. I had pastrami hash and I had to do a takeout container because I was stuffed. My wire had a cornmeal pancake with smoky tasting tree juice.! Really good, but as I say... different

Food terrific. They got a smoker and know how to use it. Staff mostly good and in spite of occasional purple hair does not veer into attitude land, thank god, which is the danger given the all the hype. It’s taking a while for some food to come out. Not surprising, since they have been hammered since day one. Waiting for them to add dinner. Fingers crossed.

It was good that we made reservations for 4 since it was Fathers Day, and were seated within 10 minutes of our reservation time. Took 15 minutes to get our order taken - 20 more minutes to get coffee, only after we had to ask for it (small cups and $1 for refills). After another 45 minutes our waiter (who had other wise ignored us all of this time) BROUGHT US OUR CHECK for $78.00 BUT HE HADN'T EVEN DELIVERED OUR FOOD!! - saying "Oh, you didn't get your food?" (DUH - you're our waiter, right?) He then went to the kitchen and eventually brought 3 of our 4 meals. After another 15 minutes I asked the hostess who was seating customers to please check on the missing meal which she tracked down and brought. This was NOT a good experience and there was NO apology from anyone for the late meals and incompetent waiter. "Oh - the waiter is new" is not an excuse for this series of events - especially giving us the bill before we got our food!!! Our plan for a nice Fathers Day brunch was ruined and left us all stressed and bewildered at the whole series of events. (Note: I'd like to be able to say that the food was worth the wait, but it was not. The pastrami on the Ruben was the fattiest I've ever had, and all the meals were overly greasy. Never again.)
