Sansei, meaning third generation, is a locally owned contemporary Japanese Restaurant offering new wave sushi. The force behind the food is Chef/Owner Dave "DK" Kodama. An Oahu native, he is fearless when it comes to flavors and one of the most adventurous chefs you will meet. At Sansei, he has combined his Japanese heritage with Hawai'i's incredible ethnic mix and the flavors he experienced in his travels to create a New Wave Sushi, Japanese-inspired Pacific Rim, Contemporary Japanese type of cuisine. Call it whatever you like. What you will taste are unique combinations of flavors and textures.

    Restaurant was not very crowded. Our waitress Brie was awesome!! Fun, personable and knowledgeable She helped to make our dining experience great. The food came out quickly, and the quality was very good.

    Unfortunately, the food was mediocre at best, and the service was worse. Our server was quite distracted with the other tables, but that’s stilll no excuse for the delayed and disinterested service. Similarly, the food was average, other than the hamburger which was quite good. We found the sushi fresh, but with uninspired pairings or flavors and certainly no recommendations by our server.

    This was a pleasant experience start to finish. Very welcoming staff (Kai was our waiter, he rocks). The food was meticulously made and delicious. There are some unique ingredients they will accompany main courses with that will impress. Would definitely go back.

    Sansei was amazing! Sushi was more delicious than I expected, balcony area was very quiet and the service was quick. One of my favourite stops on the trip. Even got a nice picture of our hotel tikis across the street. Would return!

    Absolutely horrible service, food mediocre. Overall not worth it. On our most recent visit, the server never brought out our appetizer. My wife did not receive her side order of rice that she had ordered. They also mixed up our sushi order bringing out wrong orders. The incompetence and the poor quality of service were beyond belief. Sadly we have been coming here for several years. But the service and management have badly deteriorated since the pandemic. But we still enjoy the location in Lahaina on Maui.

    Delicious! We always go to Sansei when in Hawaii. It is a little out of the way at the far end of the beach but totally worth walking to. Try the dynamite shrimp and the butterfish, they are dynamite!!

    Menu at the restaurant was quite different than the one online. Would have preferred the online one. Outdoor dining was suboptimal although waitress tried to make it good. Music across the way was loud and sansei was only willing to turn down its competing music a little. Food was better than the ambience. Edamame is better served hot.
