About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
Since our early days as a tea room, we’ve been a respite for locals and visitors alike, offering a haven for conversation and memorable cuisine. The tradition continues as our culinary team has curated an inventive and elevated menu through New American cuisine while paying homage to the beloved dishes that have been served at the Tabard Inn for years.

Executive Chef Matthew Zafrir came to the Tabard in 2023, bringing with him experience from various fine dining restaurants around D.C. such as minibar by José Andrés, Cranes, Revelers Hour, as well as Woodberry Kitchen in Baltimore, MD. He also shares the Tabard's longstanding commitment to sourcing ingredients locally.

Join us for a meal on our covered patio or one of our intimate dining rooms. Or enjoy drinks and light fare in our historic fireplace lounge, where you can enjoy our creative cocktails! A DC institution since 1922, we look forward to offering our guests all the comforts of a home away from home.

The ambiance was great. The service was very good. The food was disappointing. My Rockfish & Black Eyed Peas was very salty. The Winter Squash entree was drenched with vinegar to the point of not being pleasant, and another's Caesar Salad was cut into such small pieces that it absorbed too much dressing and was soggy. The desserts were not that great. Disappointing.

We loved the entranceway. It's beautiful. Aesha greeted us so kindly when we arrived for dinner and gave us a little tour. The rooms are beautifully furnished with so much detail. One room even had a curio cabinet with miniature replicas of rooms from the hotel. We were early, so we spent some time at the bar. I tried the Follow the Smoke rum craft drink. It was smoke infused with applewood. Our bartender, Darin, was attentive and took good care of us. He gave us good suggestions for dinner options. I also tried the Respect your Elders cocktail. It was delicious. Our server was Fatima. She was so nice and took excellent care of us. She checked on us periodically through our meal and was very attentive. The dining area was very charming. We ordered the Filet Mignon, grilled Salmon, cheese fritters and frisée salad. Renee always made sure our table was always cleared of dishes and we had clean silverware. My filet was slightly overcooked, but the sauce was delicious and the carrots were cooked nicely. My husband said his salmon was cooked perfectly. The frisée salad was light and refreshing. The cheese fritters were light and airy with a unique flavor that was nice. For dessert we ordered the Chocolate Neapolitan and Crème Brûlée. My husband said the Chocolate Neapolitan was extraordinary with the white chocolate on top and the chocolate mousse on top of the graham cracker crust was a nice blend of flavors and textures. The Crème Brûlée was delicious with a citrus kick, although the serving is small. We topped it off with complimentary candied beets and caramel with sea salt. After dinner we were treated to live jazz in the main room. This was so relaxing. We also liked the photos and memorabilia of the most recent owner, Margaret Kinsman.

Lovely breakfast and the ambience is excellent. We could actually hear each other talk! Fair prices as well. My friends were impressed I found this place! And the donuts were so delicious! We’re intending to return for jazz night.
