About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for brunch
Gather at the Blue Pig Tavern, our distinctive restaurant tucked in the corner of Congress Hall. Known for hearty breakfast, lunch and dinner favorites, its name derives from a gambling parlor sited in Congress Hall in the mid-1800s. Earlier still, in the 1700s, Elias Hughes operated a tavern for whalers on this site. It was the first tavern in Cape May. Today, we offer timeless classics and new seasonal delights with ingredients that are always farm-fresh.

We booked a reservation a few days in advance. When we got to the restaurant they offered us inside or outside seating. We preferred inside. They had a table available in the loud, echoing lobby. I chose to wait for the indoor table. We were seated next to the fireplace. The menu does not have allergen information on it (gluten, vegan, etc) but our server Alexa was well versed in what was and wasn’t GF and even knew about cross contamination from the non-dedicated fryers. My date and I started with a fresh garden salad from a nearby farm, and we each had a glass of wine (I had the Federalist Cabernet and he had a Paso Robles blend). My date had the Saturday prime rib special and I had the braised short rib with broccolini and garlic mashed potatoes. We ended with a shared crème brûlée. The top layer was ever so slightly burned but overall it was delish. All the food tasted super fresh and we were happy with the meal.

We enjoyed the food, but it was typical tavern food for lunch. It was nice that they offered salad as an option as a side dish. The menu should include more options. There was no offer of a soda refill from the server. Until a party was seated near us, the atmosphere was quiet and pleasant. Nevertheless, the building was impressive. It was a little expensive for lunch

Service and food was outstanding! Very cozy tavern room with wood burning fireplace added to the ambiance. After dinner drinks in the Brown Room with entertainment is a must! Can’t wait to come back again.

The steak frite I ordered had a strange taste and I returned it and asked for the chicken dish instead. The chicken was rubbery, burnt tasting and the aus jus was tasteless. The service was very nice and ambience was good, but unfortunately the food experience was a disappointment.
