   Oh, what were we thinking when we decided to wander around Cape May on a cold and rainy December day? Rain? It was raining hippopotami. So, we dashed our plans and smartly decided to indulge ourselves in a lunch befitting the weather. The Blue Pig Tavern was a perfect choice. My wife and I were seated in a cozy spot near the blazing fire. One look at the luncheon menu and we wanted to try it all, though ultimately decided on a crab cake sandwich for her and a chicken BLT on whole grain bread for me. Hers came with a salad. I had the fries. All of it was fresh and delicious. Afterward, we just had to stay for dessert — you know, the weather and all. She had what she described as the best carrot cake ever. And I could say as much for my apple pie. It comes ala mode, though I asked them to leave off the ice cream (a nod to all the other calories that decorate our holiday fare). Our waiter, Karlo, deserves special mention. He was welcoming, helpful and attentive. What more could you ask for? We wish there were more like him. Last thing: we came here because the place we had planned to visit was booked (midday on a rainy day in the off season? I guess). Next time, this will be our first choice!

   Beautifully decorated for Christmas. Lovely menu we were too hungry so husband had fish and chips and I had the shrimp bisque and their INCREDIBLE chopped salad. 10 out of 10

   My expectations were not high since several years ago the food was mediocre. The ambience was traditional Christmas with a fireplace crackling a several feet away. Its a treat to be in Congress Hall at Christmas and last night did not disappoint especially since we started in The Brown Room! I had the chopped salad that was very good and the portion is large enough for 2 diners. The meatloaf was ( I wanted comfort food) was done up very well and seasoned nicely with the sides cooked perfectly. My wife had short ribs that she also enjoyed but could not finish the portion. The service was terrific with a very friendly efficient waitress. It's not a fancy restaurant but very relaxing with loads of comfort food and ambience.

   Our meal was just ok. My chopped salad was missing components and when I noticed I got the waiter and he wanted to run and get the missing ingredients but I was done eating. When I told him this he said why did you tell me? What do you want me to do? I thought I had someone else’s meal and that it didn’t meet my expectations. He said nothing. Sad but true! I like this restaurant as it is in the hotel and a long time favorite for breakfast and lunch.

   I ordered the breakfast Sunrise sandwich. The croissant was absolutely tasteless. The crispy bacon was barely cooked and the potatoes tasted days old. I know they had a busy weekend with the tree lighting and parade but definitely subpar. Would not go back again.

    great way to celebrate a friend’s birthday during the Christmas season. Short ribs, Bolognese and brussels sprouts were all some of the best we ever had.
