This small renowned restaurant in the heart of Ilkley was founded in 1962. It was the first 2 Michelin Starred restaurant outside of London and for over 60 years has continued to be at the forefront of northern Gastronomy.

The modern British menu and extensive wine cellar offer food lovers an unforgettable experience. The kitchens commitment to the best, freshest ingredients, with an emphasis on locally sourced, fresh ingredients from farmers and local suppliers.

We’d been to the Box Tree a few times before, whilst it was under the prior management, we used to call it ‘The Secret Restaurant’ as everyone whispered and was overly formal. Having heard the hype since Braydon took over, and as we were big fans of the Raby Hunt, we thought we’d give it another go. We were absolutely wowed! Whilst the restaurant definitely needs a bit of a facelift, the food was exceptional, the service was informal yet attentive and the wine flight was the best we’ve ever had (someone really needs to give the sommelier an award or a pay rise at the very least). Our favourite dishes were the langoustine (surprisingly rich and accompanied by the most perfect wine that took us straight to the heart of Valencia - a true Ratatouille moment), and the Brillat-Savarin encased in rhubarb gel dessert. Just sublime! There was a lovely, convivial atmosphere - a definite departure from the days of ‘The Secret Restaurant’. We look forward to seeing The Box Tree evolve further, investment in the interior would bring synergy with the modern menu. It would be a real shame if the exceptional efforts of Braydon and the team were hampered because people didn’t want to dine in Grandma’s living room. We will be back!

If you value the best food, the best wines, the best service and the best atmosphere, you just can’t go wrong here. Just spectacular. If you can afford it, go often and if you can’t, save up. You won’t regret it.

Overall a good experience. Some dishes outstanding, others not so. It was Valentines Day so the company was excellent! However, what spoilt the occasion was that there's an awkward link between two dining rooms which requires ducking down to get through to the table. Unfortunately no one warned me and I ended up cracking my head and nearly knocking myself out. Certainly saw stars with a bit of whiplash for a good hour or so. The waiter should have warned me. The dining room is not the warmest and cooled down through the afternoon as people departed.
