About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
The Cat Inn is a 16th century free house set in the picturesque village of West Hoathly, a hilltop village set in the heart of the Sussex countryside. It is in within easy distance from the towns of East Grinstead and Haywards Heath and only 25 minutes from Gatwick Airport.

The Pub with its oak beams and two inglenook fireplaces proffers a warm and cosy atmosphere in the winter, whilst our terrace is perfect to enjoy a drink and food in the summer months. Being a free house we pride ourselves in the quality of our real ale, and concentrate on local breweries, such as Harvey's of Lewes and other micro breweries. Our food is cooked to order, using fresh, seasonal and where possible locally sourced ingredients. Our menus change on a regular basis and we also offer a small selection of seasonal specials on a daily basis.

We welcome children over the age of 7. Dogs are welcome in the "pub" area of the Cat, they are not permitted in the dining room

As usual the welcome and service was friendly and efficient. We sat in the older part of the restaurant, which my husband likes. It is quieter but a little darker, which isn't a problem, and just adds to the old pub atmosphere. The menu always has a good selection and there are specials each day. Today's specials of quail for starter and venison for main was my choice. and my husband also chose the quail and then his usual fish and chips. All of the food was delicious, the quail and venison were perfectly cooked with interesting accompaniments , and the fish and chips was, as aways, perfctly cooked. I was a good sized peice of fish in light crisp batter and golden chips. With a glass of wine each and a coffee to follow we were very happy customers .

We went to The Cat to celebrate my wife's birthday. The service was ideal; not intrusive and checking that everything was okay every few seconds, rather quietly available, should we need anything. The food, as usual, was sublime. My wife had the Plaice, I had the Steak, and both were cooked to perfection. The wine selection, which isn't a vast encyclopaedia to choose from, displayed great value and quality. The team placed a candle in a wonderful desert for my wife, which was a lovely touch. All in all, a memorable evening, for all of the right reasons. Thank you The Cat.

Visited the Csat Inn for Sunday lunch. The food was excellent, the service friendly and efficient. The Cat Inn is a lovely character building in a beautiful village and has a rear beer garden and car park. Would definately recommend.

The Cat doesn't only serve the very best pub food, it is also good value. The smaller portion cod and chips at £14 was the best deal we've had for years. It was very busy but the service was prompt and unfailingly kind and friendly. One of my favourite eating places - if only it wasn't 90 miles from home!

As always, a very warm, smiley welcome, calling me by name. Malkes you feel very special and sets the tone. Shown to table and drinks offered immediately . We aksed for a recommendation for an English sparkling wine, which Andrew described in detail (and it wasn't the most expensive) and was delicious. As normal we chatted and ignored the menus but were not pressurised in to ordering. Cod special was outstanding as were theother slections. We were reminded by the waiter that the special dessert was a cherry souffle with clotted cream ice cream so we quickly all decided on that so as not to be disappointed. Outstanding dessert. The whole experience was exceptional and The Cat remains an oasis in the culinary desert. Andrew should get a knighthood. Thank you.
